OUR CORE BELIEFS
We have no formal written creed as our guideline for teaching. The best summary of what we believe and practice at VHCC is our stand on God's Word, the Bible. We believe the whole Bible to be true and without error as it was originally written. It makes this claim for itself (2 Timothy 3:16-17), because it was inspired by God, not just the writing of man. We also believe its truth to be timeless and relevant to every person today. Accepting the whole Bible as God's word to man, we accept its clear teaching on several subjects:
GOD
We believe in God. He is the one true God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect, and eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Genesis 1:26-27; 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; John 14:26; 1 Peter 1:2; 2 Corinthians 13:14
JESUS
We believe in Jesus Christ, that He is truly God and truly man, existing for all eternity and having been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a Virgin Mary. He was totally God before His birth and all of His earthly life. He lived a life without sin, was crucified on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins, rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven where He now reigns as our High Priest and mediator. Matthew 1:22-23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5; 8:58; 10:30-38; 12:45; 14:10-30; 17:5,24; Hebrews 1:3; 4:14-15; 7:3; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 1:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; Colossians 1:17; 1 Timothy 6:14-15; Titus 2:13; 1 John 2:20-22; Revelation 22:13.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
We believe in the Holy Spirit, that His ministry is to glorify Jesus Christ and, during this age, to convict men of sin, indwell, guide, instruct, comfort, and empower the believer for godly living and service.
THE BIBLE
We believe in the Scripture. Both Old and New Testaments are the inspired Word of God, without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of men, and the divine and final authority for all Christians’ faith and life. 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21; 2 Timothy 1:13; Psalm 12:6; 19; 105; 160; Proverbs 30:5
MAN
We believe man was created in the image of God for the purpose of fellowship with God for all eternity. Man fell into sin willfully and is therefore alienated from God and without hope apart from the blood of Jesus Christ. Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6; Romans 3:23; Isaiah 59:1-2
SATAN
We believe Satan is real. He desires to “kill, steal, and destroy” the church and that he is ruler over the present world system. Job 1:6; Matthew 4:1; John 10:10-11; 2 Corinthians 11:14; 2 Thessalonians 2:8-9; Hebrews 2:14; Ephesians 6:12;1 Peter 5:8; 1 John 3:8
SALVATION
We believe a man is saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. We believe man must respond to this gift of grace by responding to God's love. The Bible says we must believe, repent of sin, confess Him as Lord, and be baptized.
CHRISTIANS
We call ourselves Christians, adding no other name of human origin. Acts 11:26; 26:28; I Corinthians 1:10-12; 1 Peter 4:16; Revelation 22:18-19.
BAPTISM
We accept baptism (being immersed in water) as the occasion when a person enters into being saved. The Scriptures show us that this is the proper response to belief in Jesus. Baptism is always accompanied by the personal faith of the person being baptized. Acts 2:38; 8:35-40; Romans 6:3-5; Galatians 3:27, I Corinthians 12:13; Hebrews 11:6
GREAT COMMISSION
We accept Christ's commission to go and make Christ followers of all nations as our commission and the primary work of the Church in the world. Matthew 28:18-20; Colossians 1:28
GODLINESS
God has given us in the Bible "everything we need for life and godliness." 2 Peter 1:2. We encourage every person to study and understand it for him or herself.
